Beyond the mountain

Make the most of the trip.

Japan is an enormous investment in time and money. A few well-placed city days make it count — without stealing from the riding.

Where cities fit

Three patterns that work.

City first

Tokyo → Mountain → Home

Recover from jet lag in the city. Arrive at the mountain rested.

City last

Mountain → Tokyo → Home

Ride while fresh; the city becomes your recovery and buffer before the flight.

Recommended

Open-jaw

Tokyo → Mountain → Kyoto → Osaka

Fly into Tokyo, out of Osaka. No backtracking.

Tokyo
2–3 daysStart or end

Tokyo

Most Honshu trips pass through Tokyo anyway. Placing Tokyo at the end lets you ride fresh and recover in the city — but if jet lag hits you hard, a first-night Tokyo stop protects your first riding day.

Logistics: Stay near your onward station (Tokyo or Ueno for Nagano-bound Shinkansen). Forward board bags so you're not dragging them through the city.

Closest resorts: Hakuba · Nozawa Onsen · Shiga Kōgen · Myōkō

Kyoto
2–3 daysEnd of trip

Kyoto

Worth it if you have the days — but it's a real transfer from the mountains. Kyoto fits best after your riding block, before flying out of Osaka (KIX) or back through Tokyo.

Logistics: Consider an open-jaw ticket: arrive Tokyo, depart Osaka. Forward snowboard gear home or to your departure airport once riding is done.
